For train riders, while 39% always felt safe during the day on the train or at the station, this dropped to 15% during nighttime on the train. Even fewer, 11%, always felt secure going to or from the station at night (Figure 18.3). For bus riders, it was more common than for train riders to always feel safe; 61% always felt safe using the bus during the day and 55% always felt safe at the bus stop. At nighttime, this decreased to 19%, for always feeling safe on the bus and to 13% for walking to or from the bus stop (Figure 18.4). Thirteen percent of the respondents seldom or never felt safe taking the bus at night, while only 1% felt such insecurity during the day. However, traveling by bus, even at night, was perceived to be relatively safe, with most respondents (62%) reporting often or always feeling safe at night; this was not the case when traveling by train.
